Adwoa Safo Reverses Course, Will Seek Dome-Kwabenya NPP Ticket Again

The former MP of 12 years says consultations with party leaders changed her mind about leaving the constituency behind.

Former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has announced that she will contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries in the constituency, abandoning an earlier plan to look for political opportunities elsewhere.

She made the announcement in a statement dated Thursday, October 22, 2026, as reported by Ghanaian Times.

What changed her mind

Adwoa Safo said the reversal came after consultations with the leadership and executives of the NPP, the governing party's constituency and national structures, and after what she described as further reflection on her commitment to the people of Dome-Kwabenya.

She had previously indicated she would pursue opportunities outside the constituency, a position that effectively took her out of the race. That position no longer stands.

A 12-year record she is leaning on

Adwoa Safo represented Dome-Kwabenya, one of the large and fast-growing constituencies in the Greater Accra Region, for 12 years in Parliament.

In her statement she pointed to the party's vote numbers in the constituency during her time as the candidate. She said the NPP's votes in Dome-Kwabenya rose from 63,373 in 2012 to 75,041 in 2020 — an increase of roughly 11,700 votes across two election cycles.

She said she wants to build on the development work carried out while she was MP and to deal with problems in the constituency that remain unresolved. She did not, in the statement, list those outstanding problems.

An appeal to the grassroots

Adwoa Safo asked party members, stakeholders and ordinary constituents to engage with her as she seeks another term in Parliament. In the NPP's system, parliamentary candidates are chosen by party delegates at the constituency level, so winning over local executives and polling station officers is the first and most important hurdle.

Why this matters for readers abroad

For Ghanaians in the United States and elsewhere who follow politics at home, Dome-Kwabenya is a constituency worth watching. It is urban, heavily populated, and has long been counted among the NPP's stronger seats in Greater Accra. A contested primary there is an early indicator of how the party is organising ahead of the next general election.

Many diaspora families also have direct ties to the area through property, relatives and businesses in the Dome, Kwabenya and Haatso belt, which means constituency-level decisions on roads, water and sanitation reach far beyond Ghana's borders.

What happens next

The statement does not give a date for the NPP primaries in Dome-Kwabenya, and it does not name any other aspirant who may be in the race. Those details are expected to come from the party's national headquarters when the primaries timetable is published.
