Two Held In Techiman Over Killing Of Footballer Agartha Takyiwaa

The 22-year-old Fabulous Ladies player was stabbed to death while working a night shift on her commercial tricycle in the Ashanti Region.

Two suspects have been picked up in Techiman in the Bono Region in connection with the killing of 22-year-old footballer Agartha Takyiwaa, her club coach has confirmed.

Nana Atuahene, who coaches Fabulous Ladies, gave the update in an interview with Luv FM, as reported by Daily Guide Network.

What happened

Takyiwaa was killed on the evening of Thursday, 29 October 2026 at Afrancho, in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region. She suffered stab wounds to the thigh, stomach and neck.

Outside football, she earned money as a commercial tricycle rider — the vehicles Ghanaians commonly call pragya, widely used for short-distance transport in towns and peri-urban areas.

According to her coach, she picked up a female passenger at about 10:30pm and set off for Afrancho New Site. The trip ended in a struggle between the player and suspected attackers over her tricycle. She was stabbed during that confrontation and died.

The assailants took the tricycle and her mobile phone. Investigators were later able to trace the suspects using the location of the stolen phone, which led to the arrests in Techiman.

A player getting ready for a new season

Takyiwaa had been in preparation for the 2026/27 Women's Division One League, the second tier of organised women's football in Ghana.

Coach Atuahene said the club had not yet formally reported the death to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the body that governs the sport in the country.

He also used the moment to point to the thin financial footing of the women's game. "Women's football is still young in Ghana," he said, explaining that players at his level are registered as amateurs rather than professionals, and that club support is largely limited to transport costs.

That detail helps explain why Takyiwaa was on the road late at night. Many players in the lower tiers of women's football combine training and matches with trading, driving or other informal work to cover daily expenses.

What to watch next

The immediate questions are what charges, if any, the two suspects will face, and whether the police will confirm further arrests. The source report did not name the suspects, did not state which police command made the arrests, and did not carry an official police statement on the case.

There was also no indication of when the club intends to notify the GFA, or whether the association will respond publicly.

For Ghanaians abroad following the women's game, the case is a reminder of how fragile the support structures around the sport remain. Until players at Division One level are on professional terms, many will continue to take on risky night work to stay in football.
