Police pick up NPP Bosome Freho chairman over torn ballot paper

A dispute over whether one delegate was eligible to vote ended with the constituency chairman in police hands at the NPP’s national conference.

The constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Bosome Freho in the Ashanti Region, Patrick Kwaku Frimpong, has been picked up by the Ghana Police Service after an alleged incident involving a ballot paper at the party's National Delegates Conference.

The NPP is Ghana's main opposition party, and the conference is where delegates from across the country elect the people who will run the party machinery.

What is alleged to have happened

As reported by Adom Online, citing Accra-based Channel One News, the trouble started when a delegate from Bosome Freho ran into problems with the electoral system at the voting point and could not cast a ballot.

There was already a question mark over that delegate. The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NPP, Dr Francis Adomako, is said to have written to the constituency earlier to bar the person from voting in Saturday's election.

Even so, when the delegate hit the technical snag, the Electoral Commission (EC)

is said to have issued a ballot paper so the person could vote. The EC is the state body that runs public elections in Ghana and is often invited to conduct internal party polls as well.

Mr Frimpong is alleged to have seized that ballot paper and torn it up. Police then took him in for questioning.

What is not yet known

Several important details remain unclear. It has not been stated publicly what charge, if any, Mr Frimpong faces, where he is being held, or what the police inquiry has found so far. The full circumstances of the incident have also not been confirmed by the party or the police.

Mr Frimpong has not been reported as commenting on the allegation. Nothing in the available reporting establishes wrongdoing, and the matter is at the questioning stage.

A conference with other incidents

The arrest was not the only disruption at the gathering. Adom Online also reported that four vehicles were damaged when a billboard collapsed at the conference grounds, and that three people were injured in a stampede at the event.

Together, the incidents point to crowd and logistics pressures at a conference that drew delegates from every region.

Why it matters

Internal party elections set the leadership that will shape the NPP's campaign structure going forward, so disputes over who may vote and how ballots are handled carry weight beyond a single constituency.

For Ghanaians in the United States who follow party politics from a distance, the episode is a reminder that eligibility disputes at the constituency level can spill over into the national stage, and that the police are now involved in what began as an internal party disagreement.

NewsPulse GH will follow the police inquiry and any statement from the NPP.
