Konate leaves France camp with knee sprain, out for about a week

The Real Madrid defender picked up the injury in training with France, but reports say he should be back within eight days.

Real Madrid defender Ibrahima Konate has left the France national team camp after spraining his knee in training, but the injury is not considered serious.

The Ghanaian Times reports that Konate, who joined Real Madrid in the summer transfer window, was released from camp a day after the injury was confirmed. Checks indicated the problem was minor rather than long-term.

How long he is expected to be out

French journalist Fabrice Hawkins of RMC Sport reports that the centre-back is expected to be sidelined for only seven to eight days. That timeline would keep him out of France's current international fixtures but return him to his club quickly.

For Real Madrid, that is the key detail. Konate has become a regular starter for the Spanish club this season, so a short absence rather than a multi-week layoff removes a major worry for the coaching staff.

Called up alongside Mbappe and Camavinga

Konate had been named in the France squad by the national team's new manager, Zinedine Zidane. The call-up list also included Kylian Mbappe and Eduardo Camavinga, two other players with Real Madrid links.

Les Bleus is the common nickname for the French national football team, meaning "The Blues".

Knee sprains are among the more common injuries in professional football. A sprain involves stretched or partly torn ligaments around the joint, and unlike a full ligament tear it usually heals with rest and rehabilitation rather than surgery. That is why a recovery window of about a week is realistic in this case.

Why Ghanaian fans are watching

Real Madrid and the French national team have large followings in Ghana and among Ghanaians living in the United States, where European club matches are widely streamed. Squad news of this kind often shapes weekend viewing plans and the endless debates in WhatsApp groups and at the local spots.

Club-versus-country injuries also remain a sensitive subject in football. When a player is hurt while on international duty, clubs that pay his wages are left to manage the recovery. In Konate's case, the short timeline means the issue is unlikely to escalate into a dispute.

Neither Real Madrid nor the French football federation has been reported as giving a longer prognosis. The next confirmation will come from the club's medical team once Konate resumes training.

The player himself has not publicly commented on the injury.
