Organisers say this year’s festival is built around tourism, trade and youth engagement, with a grand durbar at Anloga on November 7.
The chiefs and people of the Anlo State in the Volta Region have launched the 64th Hogbetsotso Festival, with organisers saying the celebration this year is deliberately shaped to draw tourists, support local businesses and get young people involved in the area's development.
The launch took place at Tegbi in the Anloga District, where the Ghanaian Times reported that the Chairman of the 2026 Hogbetsotso Festival Planning Committee, Togbui Ziwu, delivered a speech on behalf of the Awadada of Anlo, Togbui Agbesi Awusu.
This year's theme is "Anlo, our heritage and our values: Striving to build one Ghana for a better tomorrow."
What the festival marks
Hogbetsotso is the annual festival of the Anlo people, remembering their migration from Notsie in present-day Togo to their current home along Ghana's southeastern coast. It is one of the best-attended festivals on the Volta calendar, drawing Anlo citizens from across Ghana and abroad.
The economic angle
Togbui Agbesi Awusu said the festival is meant to open up economic opportunities in the Anlo State, particularly in tourism, agriculture and trade. He framed it as a national platform for cultural discipline and local economic empowerment, and linked traditional accountability to the national effort to reset Ghana's economy.
He said Hogbetsotso now goes beyond displaying culture to showing the commitment of the Anlo people to a united and peaceful nation. He asked citizens, residents and friends of Anlo to take part actively, strengthen community ties and inspire young people.
Dates and activities
A member of the Planning Committee, Togbui Kpemini Gawu III, said activities began on September 22, 2026, and will climax with a grand durbar at Anloga on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
Other events on the calendar include:
- Clean-up exercises, which organisers say carry both physical and spiritual meaning
- A mini durbar at Blamezado on October 17, 2026
- Engagements with basic schools on the meaning of the festival
- The Hogbe Corporate Investment Forum
- The sitting in state of the Awoamefia of Anlo, Togbe Sri III, the paramount ruler of the Anlo State
Togbui Kpemini also announced that the 2026 edition will honour Anlo citizens who have made notable contributions to the area's development, as a way of encouraging others.
Heritage as a resource
Another committee member, Mr Siegfried Vilawoe Sedziafa, said the theme pushes the celebration past simple remembrance into a conversation about the future. He described heritage as a resource that present and future generations can draw values and responsibility from, rather than something only to be preserved.
For Ghanaians in the United States planning a trip home, the November 7 durbar at Anloga is the date to mark. The Hogbe Corporate Investment Forum is likely to be the main point of contact for diaspora investors looking at opportunities in the area, though organisers did not announce a date for it at the launch.
