The state-owned coach operator says the driver is off duty pending an investigation into a hit-and-run caught on camera at Pokuase.
Intercity STC Coaches Limited has taken one of its drivers off duty after a video circulating online appeared to show an STC bus striking a Sprinter minibus while overtaking at Pokuase, and then leaving the scene.
The company confirmed the action in a public notice, reported by Ghanaian Times. Management said the driver has been identified and interdicted, meaning he is suspended from work while a disciplinary process runs its course.
What the company said
STC described the behaviour seen in the video as unacceptable and said it did not match the safety standards and professional conduct the company expects from its drivers.
An internal investigation began immediately, according to the notice. The company said it is also waiting on an official report from the Pokuase Police Command before drawing conclusions about exactly what happened on the road that day.
Management thanked members of the public who drew attention to the footage, and promised that appropriate action would follow once the investigation is complete.
Why this matters
Intercity STC Coaches Limited is Ghana's best-known long-distance bus operator, running routes that connect Accra to Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi and other regional centres. For many families, including Ghanaians abroad who book seats for relatives travelling home for funerals, weddings or school terms, STC is the service they trust precisely because it is expected to be safer and more regulated than informal transport.
That is why a video of one of its coaches allegedly hitting a smaller vehicle and driving off carries weight beyond the single incident. Pokuase, on the Accra–Nsawam stretch in the Greater Accra Region, is a busy corridor where interchange traffic, commercial minibuses and long-distance coaches share the same lanes.
The social media factor
The case is another example of how footage shared by ordinary road users is now driving accountability in Ghana's transport sector. STC said it acted after the video was brought to its attention, rather than through an internal report.
It is worth noting what has not yet been established. The company has not named the driver publicly, has not said whether anyone was injured, and has not confirmed the sequence of events. Those details are expected to come from the police report.
What happens next
Two processes are now running in parallel: the police inquiry at Pokuase and STC's own disciplinary procedure. Interdiction is not a dismissal. It is a holding measure that keeps the driver away from the wheel while the facts are checked.
STC says it will inform the public of the outcome. Until then, the allegation remains an allegation, and the driver's side of the story has not been reported.
