The former Awutu Senya East MP beat Mohammed Safia by 738 votes to 429 as the NPP picked new national executives ahead of the next election cycle.
Mavis Hawa Koomson is the new National Women's Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), after winning a two-way contest at the party's National Delegates Conference in Kumasi.
The vote took place on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. Koomson polled 738 votes against the 429 votes of her closest challenger, Mohammed Safia, as reported by Ghanaian Times.
A return to national office
Koomson previously represented Awutu Senya East in Parliament. She lost that seat, and Saturday's result marks her return to a leadership role, this time at the national level of the party rather than in the legislature.
She told reporters after the declaration that she does not see her political path as a setback, and that reaching national office in the party is something she is proud of. Her reason for contesting, she said, was to keep contributing to the NPP and to put her experience to use.
"We are all NPP members"
One of her first messages was about unity. Koomson said she intends to work with Safia despite the contest between them.
"We are all NPP members and we are going to work together for victory," she said.
She named her immediate priority as bringing the party's women together and getting them active at both grassroots and national level.
Koomson also used the moment to speak about women's safety. She recounted being attacked and said another woman stepped in and helped save her life. Drawing on that, she urged women to stand up for one another and spoke about self-defence, including carrying pepper spray.
What the job involves
The National Women's Organiser coordinates and mobilises women across the NPP. The role covers building up the women's wing at constituency and regional level and pushing for higher participation of women in party work.
Koomson will now sit alongside the other newly elected national executives chosen at the same conference, with the task of preparing the women's wing for the party's coming political activities. She thanked delegates for the confidence placed in her.
The wider conference
The delegates conference drew party members from across the country to choose a new national leadership. The stadium filled with supporters in the NPP's red, white and blue. Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was among the senior figures present.
After the result was announced, Koomson walked around the stadium with supporters to thank delegates.
Why it matters for Ghanaians abroad
For Ghanaians in the United States and elsewhere who follow party politics from a distance, these internal elections are an early signal of how the NPP is organising itself for the next national contest. The women's wing is one of the party's main mobilising structures, and who leads it shapes how the party reaches voters at constituency level.
