The NPP flagbearer used the party’s delegates conference to push for unity after a bruising presidential primary.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has told the party members who ran against him and lost that they will not be sidelined as the party builds towards the 2028 general elections.
He made the assurance at the NPP's national delegates conference, where he urged the defeated aspirants to see themselves as part of the campaign machinery rather than as losers of an internal contest.
"You'll be part of the 2028 campaign; there's enough work for all of us," he said, according to reporting by The Ghana Report.
Closing ranks after the primary
Bawumia's message was mainly about unity. He appealed to party members to put the bitterness of the internal race behind them and turn their attention to strengthening the party structures.
He noted that the NPP will need contributions from its different leaders and members as it moves into the next electoral cycle. In practice, that is a recognition that a presidential primary in a large party leaves behind camps, and those camps either get absorbed or they drift.
The NPP lost power in the 2024 general elections, with Bawumia as its candidate at the time. The party is now in opposition and rebuilding.
What the conference was for
The remarks came as the delegates conference wrapped up. Delegates at the gathering were electing new national officers and also considering proposed amendments to the party's constitution.
Those two items matter more than they may sound. National officers run the party's day-to-day organisation, including how candidates are selected and how the campaign is financed and managed. Constitutional amendments can change the rules of the game, for example on how delegates are chosen or how party structures are composed.
Together, they mark the start of what the party is framing as a new phase of internal reorganisation ahead of 2028.
Why this matters for Ghanaians abroad
For Ghanaians in the United States and elsewhere who follow party politics from a distance, the delegates conference is usually the clearest early signal of where a party is heading. The people elected as national officers now are the ones likely to shape the NPP's 2028 strategy, including how it engages diaspora branches and fundraising networks.
A flagbearer who publicly promises roles to his former rivals is also signalling that he wants a broad coalition inside the party rather than a narrow inner circle. Whether that promise translates into actual appointments is the test to watch in the coming months.
What happens next
Attention now shifts to the newly elected national executives and to any constitutional changes approved at the conference. Ghana's next general elections are due in 2028.
