A solidarity message at the NPP’s national conference urged members to focus on internal reorganisation rather than internal quarrels.
The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), one of the country's smaller registered political parties, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to keep its members together and put its energy into fixing its internal structures.
The appeal came in a solidarity message delivered at the NPP's National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3. The Ghana Report carried details of the message.
What the LPG said
The LPG described the conference as a chance for the NPP to strengthen its internal democracy and pull its members closer together at a time when the party is going through reorganisation.
Its central warning was about distraction. The party cautioned NPP members not to let disagreements, or the conduct of particular individuals, derail the rebuilding effort. Members, it said, should keep their attention on the party's political goals rather than on people it believes are pulling the party off course.
The LPG did not name any individual in the portion of the message reported.
A comment on Bawumia
The smaller party also offered a reading of the national mood. It said it believed many Ghanaians were unhappy with the current political situation and that interest in former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is the NPP's flagbearer, was growing.
The LPG was careful to frame that as analysis rather than support. It said the remark was an observation about where politics stands at the moment, not simply an endorsement of the former Vice President.
Call for tolerance
Beyond the NPP, the LPG addressed political actors generally, asking them to protect democratic values and practise tolerance. It raised concern about what it called harassment and intolerance in the political space, though the reported message did not set out specific incidents.
The conference itself
The NPP's National Delegates Conference is being held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. More than 7,000 delegates were expected to attend and vote in the election of national officers.
The national executive positions decided at a delegates conference matter well beyond the hall. The officers chosen run the party machinery, manage internal disputes and organise the structures that a flagbearer depends on heading into a general election.
Why it matters for Ghanaians abroad
For Ghanaians in the United States and elsewhere who follow party politics from a distance, conferences like this are the clearest public signal of where a party stands internally. The NPP lost power at the 2024 elections and has since been rebuilding; who takes charge of its national offices shapes how that rebuilding is run.
Solidarity messages from other parties are a standard feature of Ghanaian delegates conferences. They are courtesy gestures, but they are also a chance for smaller parties to put their own views on the record before a large audience.
