Bawumia Draws Loud Cheers At NPP National Executive Elections In Kumasi

The NPP’s 2028 flagbearer arrived at Baba Yara Sports Stadium with his wife Samira to a noisy welcome from delegates gathered to choose new national officers.

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia received a loud welcome from party delegates when he arrived at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) national executive elections.

The NPP is Ghana's main opposition party, and Dr. Bawumia is its chosen flagbearer for the 2028 presidential election. He was elected candidate by delegates for both the 2024 and the 2028 races.

What happened at the stadium

Daily Guide Network reports that Dr. Bawumia arrived at the venue with his wife, Samira Bawumia, on the afternoon of the vote. When their convoy appeared on the tartan track inside the stadium, delegates broke into applause and jubilation.

Party supporters and some journalists were seen trailing the slow-moving vehicle as members sang victory songs. Dr. Bawumia waved back to the crowd as he moved through the stadium.

He greeted several party leaders before taking his place in the VVIP section. Delegates were reported to be still standing and chanting his name after he had been seated.

Why the venue matters

Baba Yara Sports Stadium is Ghana's largest stadium and sits in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital. The Ashanti Region is the NPP's strongest electoral base, and holding a national internal election there puts the party's biggest bloc of delegates close to home.

National executive elections decide who runs the party machinery, from the national chairman down to other officers, in the period leading up to the next general election. Those officers will oversee party organisation, fundraising and campaign structures in the years before the 2028 vote.

What it means for the party

For the NPP, the exercise is the first major internal test after losing power in the 2024 general election. A flagbearer already selected, followed by a fresh national executive, gives the party a leadership line-up to work with for the next electoral cycle.

For Ghanaians in the United States and elsewhere abroad who follow party politics from a distance, the Kumasi gathering is a signal of how the opposition is organising itself early. Diaspora branches of Ghana's main parties typically take their cue from decisions made at national conferences of this kind, including fundraising drives and campaign messaging.

Results of the national executive contests and the names of the officers elected were not covered in the report of Dr. Bawumia's arrival.

Dr. Bawumia served as Vice President for eight years under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo before the NPP left office. He remains the party's most recognisable figure heading into the next cycle.
