Anthony Baffoe Steps Away From Panel Hunting Next Black Stars Coach

The Ghana Football Association says the former international is no longer on the five-member search committee, leaving four people to pick the country’s next head coach.

Former Ghana international Anthony Baffoe is no longer part of the committee set up to find the next head coach of the Black Stars, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed.

The confirmation came from GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum, who said the committee's chairman, Fred Pappoe, briefed the association's Executive Council (EXCO) on the withdrawal at a meeting held last Thursday.

"There was no reason given," Asante Twum said in an interview on Max FM, adding that Pappoe told the council the remaining four members had been working since they were sworn in. His comments were first reported by Daily Guide Network.

Who is left on the committee

The panel was announced with five members and is chaired by Pappoe. Besides Baffoe, it includes former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, lawyer Agbesi Dzakpasu and high-performance specialist Faisal Chibsah.

Earlier reports had suggested that both Baffoe and Chibsah had turned down the assignment. The GFA has now confirmed only Baffoe's exit, and has not given a reason for it.

Why the search started

The committee was put together jointly by the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation after Carlos Queiroz left his post as head coach. His departure followed a poor start to Ghana's qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the continent's biggest national team tournament.

For fans following from the United States and elsewhere in the diaspora, the short version is this: Ghana is without a permanent coach, the search is being run by a small committee, and that committee has just lost one of its named members before producing a recommendation.

Who takes charge in the meantime

While the search continues, the GFA and the Sports Ministry have named an interim technical team led by Kim Lars Bjorkegren.

Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram have been appointed assistant coaches, and former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda takes the goalkeeping coach role.

That team is expected to handle the Black Stars' November assignments, a double-header against Somalia in the AFCON qualifiers. Ghana will be looking to recover ground after the slow start that cost Queiroz his job.

What happens next

The search committee's job is to recommend a candidate for the permanent position. An appointment is expected before Ghana's final round of qualifying fixtures next year.

That timeline gives the four remaining members several months to work, but it also means the interim bench will be in charge for at least the November matches.

The GFA has not said whether Baffoe will be replaced on the committee or whether the panel will simply continue with four members.
