Asamoah Gyan’s Name Enters Race For Ghana Football Association Top Job

Talk of a leadership change at the Ghana Football Association is building ahead of next year’s elections, with the country’s all-time top scorer among the names being mentioned.

Ghana's record goalscorer Asamoah Gyan is being talked about as a possible candidate for the presidency of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the body that runs the game in the country, ahead of elections due next year.

Gyan has not declared that he is running. What exists so far is speculation, reported by Joy Sports journalist Muftawu Nabila Abdulai and carried by Daily Guide Network, about who might step forward if the current president does not.

Why the question is open

The uncertainty centres on Kurt Okraku, who has led the GFA since 2019. There are suggestions he may not seek a third term.

That would come as a surprise to some. At the GFA's 2025 Congress in Prampram, delegates amended the association's statutes to raise the presidential term limit from two four-year terms to three. The change was controversial, and many read it as clearing the path for Okraku to stand again. He is also second vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the continental governing body.

Pressure on the current administration

Okraku's tenure has faced criticism over results on the pitch. The Black Stars have made a poor start to qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the continent's main national team tournament.

Before that, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. It was the first time in more than twenty years that the four-time champions were absent from the competition, and it hit hard among supporters at home and in the diaspora, for whom AFCON is one of the few fixed points in the football calendar.

Who else is in the frame

Gyan, who played for Sunderland in England and Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates, is Africa's highest scorer in World Cup history. He has worked inside the current GFA structure in several roles and is presently an ambassador for the national teams.

Other names being linked to the race include Samuel Annim Addo, a football administrator who manages Gyan; Ralph Gyambrah, who formerly chaired the Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association; Elloeny Amande, chief executive of Premier League side Karela United; and Andre Ayew, the former Black Stars captain who now runs Nania FC. A former GFA vice-president is also expected to enter.

What happens next

Nothing is firm yet. The GFA has not published an election timetable or opened the nomination process, so anyone considering a run is effectively waiting for the association to set the rules and dates.

Until that calendar is released, the names circulating remain just that: names.
